DIGITAL WRITING AND RESEARCH LAB (DWRL)

The Digital Writing and Research Lab (DWRL) is a research and pedagogy center at UT Austin devoted to providing support for research, writing methods, and pedagogy practices that center digital literacies and praxis in the classroom. I worked as a graduate student researcher and staff member from 2016-2018. My responsibilities as a DWRL staff member included producing multimodal lesson plans and blog posts, creating video tutorials on using digital tools and social media in the classroom, and leading workshops in the classroom on subjects related to writing instruction and digital skill acquisition. These workshops included providing Power Point presentations on transitioning to college writing to open-source software workshops on tools such as Piktochart or Adobe Express in writing-centric undergraduate courses. I also provided on-site technical support for instructors and students, including troubleshooting technical difficulties in digital classrooms and supervising the borrowing and returning of the lab’s hardware equipment to faculty and staff. I also conducted independent research using data visualization and sentimental analysis tools funded by the 2017-2018 DWRL Flash Fellowship Project. Working on a team with fellow graduate student researchers, faculty, and undergraduate interns, I participated in accessibility workshops that included learning specific principles and practices of accessible design, such as how to re-format web pages and PDFs to be accessible to screen readers used by visually disabled people and how to audit web page accessibility using methods such as The WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool.

UNIVERSITY WRITING CENTER (UWC)

The University Writing Center (UWC) provides support to UT Austin students by offering resources to students including individual consultations, writing group access, and other forms of support to form a productive writing community that helps students achieve their academic and professional communication goals.

As a UWC writing consultant. I was trained in multi-disciplinary consultation with students from diverse backgrounds and professional and academic goals. I helped students develop their writing skills to communicate effectively in various professional and academic writing projects, including projects such as job application materials such as resumes and cover letters to applications for graduate or medical school to lab reports, technical writing and research grant applications. In order to become qualified for these consultations, I received training in multi-disciplinary writing consultation, particularly in professional and technical writing. Additionally, I also served as a liaison with the Longhorn Center of Academic Excellence, where I worked with students from diverse and historically excluded backgrounds. At the UWC and LCAE,  I worked with over 147 students with a 98+ satisfaction rate. My other duties at the UWC included giving presentations in other instructor’s classes on subjects such as “Transitioning from High School to College Writing” and “Plagiarism 101,” leading workshops on digital composition, contributing to resources and research for UWC official material, and assisting with other administrative work as needed, including providing copy editing assistance for the journal Praxis

The Longhorn Center for Academic Excellence (LCAE) was a part of The Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) at UT Austin that aimed specifically to serve the needs of students from historically marginalized backgrounds. As a liaison from the UWC, I worked collaboratively with students from culturally diverse backgrounds to provide support through one-on-one consultations. In addition to my training as a UWC consultant, I was also trained to work with ELL English Language Learners) and international students to provide individualized and culturally inclusive feedback.

Unfortunately, the LCAE was disbanded in 2023 due to Texas Senate Bill 17, which disbanded all “DEI” programs in public institutions in the state. An archive of the LCAE Facebook page can be found here.
